THE MAN BEHIND THE SOUND

Terracotta comes with 8 ready-made variations; each one of these is instantly playable offering a variety of options for setting the sound in the mix. The variation called Sustained, for example, uses reverse flowerpot samples mixed with an organic sounding pad to create a sound backdrop. Weighted is a preset that uses samples from a larger terracotta bowl to add warmth and more low end to the pots.

Here is the full list of layers in Terracotta:

• Terracotta – the main flowerpot samples.
• Resonation – samples from a large terracotta bowl with a lower pitch.
• Celesta – flowerpot patch altered with a transient shaper to make a softer bell-like sound.
• Steel String – a simple steel string pluck.
• Pad – an organic sounding pad made from granular fiddling.
• Music Box – a simple music box.
• Reverse – these are reverse terracotta samples.

The custom convolutions are made from a variety of sources; some are synthesised and some are real recordings. It is always surprising which sounds work great as impulses, Shivering Cold for example is a hideous synthesised noise, but when put though a convolution reverb it turns into a beautiful ambient backdrop. You can use these impulses in your other productions; all 21 of them can be found as .wav files in the Resources folder.

Dynamic drum sample libraries. Sphere Studios is one of London’s finest with a long-standing reputation amongst industry professionals.The session was engineered by studio owner Francesco Cameli who has worked with an extensive client list that includes the likes of Queen, Phil Collins, West Life, Gary Moore, Bullet For My Valentine, New Model Army and TesseracT. Martin Oldham (clients including Maroon 5, Keane, Elton John, Killing Joke and Razorlight) was also on hand as drum tech for the session. Together they ensured that the drums were set up to be enriched by the outstanding acoustics of Sphere’s live room. This combination of precision and expertise added enlivening levels of depth and detail to the samples in a strive to create a clear and unique overall sound.

Behind the drum hits were Jamie Postones (TesseracT) and Mike Malyan (Monuments). Both drummers are highly skilled and well respected for bringing a new force to modern drumming. Edited and co-engineered by Tesseract founder Acle Kahney, these samples are a delivery of his personal ideal in drum sound production.

Most celeste pedals allow for only one dynamic layer but this piano is more responsive than others so not only did we record several round robins, we recorded 2 dynamic layers, release triggers and round robin pedal damping and releasing. We think it’s the most beautiful “soft” piano out there, this celeste pedal isn’t going to come off for a while!!
